Just like any other career, graphic designers can function to complete their assigned task, or preform to create exceptional work to impress their clientele. Granted, graphic designers go to college to earn the same degrees, but certain skills paired with those said degrees can be the defining factors that differentiate a functioning graphic designer from a performing one. For example, how to explain why creating a logo in Microsoft PowerPoint is a bad idea tends to not be found in college course curriculum. That agonizing conversation tends to be solved through the art form of effective communication. Beyond communication though, there are several other key skills/attributes that a graphic designer should possess.

The article referenced above summarizes some of those useful designer skills that go beyond the average degree. Unfortunately, while reading you’ll have to excuse some of the awkward wording at times, but beyond that, the foundational message does stay intact. Many of the different attributes that are presented in this article could be seen as basic requirements for many careers. Basic communication and adhering to workplace ethics are some general standard workplace expectations. A specific position such as a graphic designer however, poses more specific guidelines. Specifically, a graphic designer should expect to be required to communicate and explain their reasoning behind their design decisions.

The second of the two articles takes a similar approach as the first, but also infuses examples into the reasoning behind the skills presented. The examples were particularly useful as many designers or designers to be could relate to the specific situations. The second article also felt more refined, since it presented five skills instead of ten. Some of the ten skills could have been pulled from or joined together from the last article. Overall, its beneficial to remember that for graphic design
